Is Shamanic Healing Real? A Different Question Entirely

Is there evidence? Isn't this just belief? Those are questions I hear asked about shamanic healing, though almost never by the people who actually come to see me. What I notice instead, from the moment someone walks through the door, is curiosity. Often, reverence. Interestingly, a large number of my clients are doctors of psychology, psychotherapists, and counsellors, people who spend their working lives studying the mind, and who seem to sense, more than most, that there's more to us than the mind alone can explain.

Working with spirit isn't a modern invention needing modern proof. It's one of the oldest, most consistently human practices there is, found in some form across every indigenous culture, on every continent, for as long as people have existed. Long before organised religion, before science, before any framework we'd recognise today, people were speaking with spirit and offering healing through it. That's not fringe. That's ancestral.

I think a lot of people find their way to this work because something in them already knows it, even if they've never had language for it. So many people I meet have quietly stepped away from the religion they grew up with, it no longer resonates, or its history sits too heavily to trust. But the hunger underneath that, for something spiritual, something connected, doesn't disappear just because the old container stopped fitting. I saw this constantly in my yoga classes too, something as simple as chanting in Sanskrit at the start and end of a class, and people would light up, hungry for exactly that. We're wired for this. We've just become disconnected from it.

Shamanic healing, to me, isn't asking you to adopt a belief system. It's inviting you back to something far older than belief, a human practice of communicating with spirit and offering healing through that connection, the same thread running through every culture that came before the question "is this real" was even being asked.

My clients span every walk of life, film producers, retirees, finance directors, musicians, electricians, housewives, there's no single type of person drawn to this work. It's not a niche interest. It's simply human.

So if you're the kind of person still asking whether this is real before you'll consider it, that's completely understandable, it's the question our culture trained us to ask. But most people who actually try this don't arrive needing it answered first. They arrive curious. And curiosity, it turns out, tends to be enough.
