You might picture it a bit like regulating an engine... keeping something steady, stopping it from overheating. But what does that actually mean, in real life, in your body, on a Wednesday morning?

Here's what usually isn't said.

That background hum of anxiety, the irritation that flares faster than it should, the way you go quiet and foggy in certain situations, the urge to smooth things over even when something in you is unhappy... these are not random. They are your nervous system moving through fight, flight, freeze or fawn. Every one of us lives in these states without knowing their names or recognising them as they happen.

Regulation is what happens once you can.

Once you know which state you're in, you can bring yourself back to a natural, steady calm, on purpose, instead of waiting for it to pass. And something else shifts alongside it. Your emotions stop swinging so wildly, because they're no longer being driven by a nervous system running the show without you.

It usually comes around week three or four. Something happens... a tight chest before a meeting, a flash of irritation with your partner, that familiar 3am wide-awake feeling... and instead of being swept into it, you notice it. You know what it is. You know where it lives in your body. And, without really trying, you know what to do next.

Once you know how your nervous system works, you can't go back to not knowing. You might ignore it sometimes. Everyone does. But it becomes a choice, not a blind spot. That shift is permanent.

Most things that help in the moment stop helping the moment they end.

A massage. A holiday. A good night's sleep.
