Is Reiki Just Placebo? What's Actually Happening

It's a question I get asked often, usually by people who are curious but want permission to take it seriously first. Here's my honest answer: I do not need Western science to validate Reiki, and neither does Reiki itself.

Reiki, like most Eastern healing philosophies, was never built on needing to be proven. It's an experiential practice, something felt and known through the body, not something that requires a peer-reviewed study to be real. Science's job is to verify and measure, and it does that well, and rightly so, but it's not the only lens through which something can be true or effective. Quantum physics, with its understanding of energy, fields, and connection beyond what we can see, arguably gets closer to explaining what's happening in a Reiki session than conventional biomedical science ever will, because it's asking a different kind of question entirely.

The West is, in many ways, still catching up to what Eastern traditions have quietly understood for centuries, that the body holds wisdom, that energy moves and shifts, that healing doesn't always announce itself through a mechanism we can name.

So if you're waiting for a study to tell you Reiki is "real" before you try it, you might be waiting a while, and honestly, theres no need to wait. All that's actually required is a willingness to be open to the experience, to let yourself receive it, rather than analysing or resisting your way through it. The people who get the most from Reiki aren't the ones who've been convinced by evidence, they're the ones who simply allowed themselves to experience it fully, without getting in their own way.

That's really the only "proof" that's ever mattered here: what you feel, in your own body, when you finally let yourself stop bracing.
